The Benefits of Secondments

Is there a better way to get to know clients than an in-house secondment?

Probably not.

Today we want to make the business case for secondments – something that LOVEN has recently tested with positive outcomes for both parties.

Here are 5 benefits of a secondment:

1. Client knowledge and subsequent ability to improve the quality of client care.

There is no better way of really understanding a client’s requirements by experiencing how they do things in person. Seeing things up close presents a more accurate picture of a business and how it works. The insight gleaned on a secondment can be used after to increase value and efficacy. What can be gleaned from the business to the right?

2. The strengthening of the human connection and personal relationship.

Just communicating via email and telephone is not the same as in person interaction. Whilst some of this can be managed by meeting in respective organisations’ offices or at a neutral location, a secondment acts as a catalyst, as it increases contact. You find out not just what is required but how to communicate and what is of primary importance to the client. You get to experience the culture of the organization and the country you are working within. Perhaps you find out the client is still in the technological dark ages as the photo on the right suggests.

3. Continuous professional development

A secondment – at a client’s office or reverse – enables the secondee to see how things work up close and see the bigger picture of that business and the markets that it serves. What does the business offering on the right project?

4. Secondments provide a business development opportunity and can reduce the cost of sales.

Having an up-close view of a client’s business position and more opportunities for personal interactions will lead to more and broader conversations. This will naturally lead in turn to more opportunities for new business. Would you travel to a client meeting in this car?

5. Flexibility in service delivery can improve efficiencies.

Being able to move manpower can ensure that desk space is fully utilised and in cases reduce unnecessary travel. This can therefore reduce a business’ carbon footprint and contribute to sustainability goals. Let’s fill those tables.

What is your experience of business secondments? What practical tips can you share?

Without an attorney to handle the complex legal and technical issues involved in obtaining good patent and trademark protection, you are very likely to end up with something too narrow in its scope and therefore easy to get round. Trying to save money on a patent or trademark application can prove to be costly down the line. Looking to protect your designs, brand or inventions the right way? Call us today:
